Take the AFFA Action Equality Champion Pledge
A Public Commitment to LGBTQ+ Equality in South Carolina
Candidates and elected officials have an opportunity to demonstrate where they stand on issues affecting LGBTQ+ South Carolinians.
The AFFA Action Equality Champion Pledge is a voluntary commitment for candidates for South Carolina public office and sitting elected officials at the state, county, and municipal levels who are committed to advancing equality and protecting the dignity and rights of LGBTQ+ people.
By signing the pledge, you are making a public commitment to the principles below. After submitting the pledge, participants will receive an AFFA Action Equality Champion badge that they may display on their campaign website, personal website, social media, or other public-facing materials.
The Pledge
I pledge to serve South Carolinians with a commitment to equality, dignity, and freedom for all, including LGBTQ+ people.
As a candidate for public office or sitting elected official, I commit to:
-
I will work to advance a South Carolina where LGBTQ+ people can live openly and authentically, participate fully in their communities, and enjoy the same rights, protections, opportunities, and freedoms as everyone else. I will support policies and practices that promote equality and dignity, oppose discrimination and unequal treatment, and consider the broader impact of government decisions on LGBTQ+ people and their families.
-
I will listen to LGBTQ+ constituents, families, advocates, and community members and consider their experiences when developing and evaluating public policy.
-
I will consider the impact of legislation, policies, and government actions on LGBTQ+ people and their families.
-
I will support efforts to create communities where LGBTQ+ people can live, work, learn, and participate in public life without discrimination or harassment.
-
I will treat LGBTQ+ constituents and advocates with dignity and respect, including when we disagree.
-
When LGBTQ+ equality is at stake, I will use my position and my voice to communicate clearly about where I stand and why.
-
I understand that this pledge represents a public commitment. I welcome constituents and the public holding me accountable for my positions and actions.
